Technological developments have transformed the way people conduct buying and selling activities. Nowadays, transactions can be carried out via marketplaces, social media and various online shopping applications without the need for face-to-face contact. Whilst this convenience offers benefits to both sellers and buyers, it also gives rise to several issues, such as discrepancies between the goods and their description, fraud, unclear information and returns. This study aims to examine the practice of online buying and selling from the perspective of fiqh al-muamalah, particularly regarding the legal basis, the essential elements and conditions of a sale, as well as the issues that arise in its implementation. This study employs a qualitative method using a literature review approach, drawing upon the Qur’an, hadith, books on fiqh al-muamalah, and fatwas relating to online transactions. The results of the study indicate that online buying and selling is, in principle, permissible provided it complies with the provisions governing transactions in Islam. The validity of a transaction is determined not only by the medium used but also by the clarity of the goods and price, the agreement between the parties, and the absence of prohibited elements such as fraud and ambiguity. Therefore, honesty, transparency of information, and accountability are essential in the conduct of online buying and selling to ensure that transactions take place fairly and benefit all parties.
